Our History

In the 1960's Spring Hill served as a local public recreation area, drawing people from around the area to enjoy its 60+ acres and waterfront for picnics, games, and swimming in the summer, and skating, skiing and tobogganing in the winter.

The Lodge, with its panoramic view of the recreation area, and its warm open fireplace, welcomed and warmed the hands and hearts of local families.

In the 70's, John and Rosalie Scharf became the owners and caretakers of the South Berwick landmark.  The grounds and facilities were modernized, and the two decades to follow saw Spring Hill and its scenic acres become a highly sought-after venue for weddings, company picnics, banquets, parties and business functions.

In the mid-nineties, with son Eric continuing the family tradition and taking on a management role along with his wife Dulcy, Spring Hill grew again.  A full-service restaurant - The Lodge Restaurant - announced its grand opening.  The restaurant was an instant success, blending fine dining with a local flair and the personal touch that has always defined Spring Hill.

2001 proved to be the most trying in Spring Hill's history.  The Lodge was struck by a pre-dawn fire in early February of that year.  The only remaining portion of the landmark was the massive stone chimney, which stood defiantly - perhaps a symbol of the heart of the Lodge which had welcomed so many.

Plans for reconstruction were laid out before the snow had even melted, led by the steadfast vision of Eric Scharf.

A New Chapter

With help from family, friends and the community, Spring Hill re-opened in early 2002, in spectacular fashion.  The new facility is a beautifully rustic and modern building boasting panoramic views from both function rooms as well as the restaurant.  A large walk-out deck with access from the restaurant and the main function hall hugs the entire length of the building, overlooking the countryside and the waterfront.

Spring Hill Today

The family tradition continues, with Rosalie Scharf sharing ownership and management roles with her brother Harland Goodwin. Together, they have forged a new future for Spring Hill, which finds them busier than ever before - wedding receptions have been booked well into 2008 and The Lodge Restaurant continues to thrive.
